Lace tour

Old and new, religious and profane, industry and art ... These are just some of the fascinating contrasts that have characterized lace for centuries. For the 'Living Lace' exhibition, students and teachers from various art academies in Flanders and Brussels got inspired by two historical sites in Leuven, designing modern lace creations: the Predikheren Church and the chapel of the Romanesque Gate. The first is the oldest Gothic church in Leuven, the second is part of the former Augustinian convent. Both buildings are located in one of the oldest parts of the university town. They challenged  the participants to jointly set up an intriguing and exciting project. By exhibiting together, students and teachers inspire each other.

Textile artworks are created in a dialogue with the religious locations, using thread, bobbins, needles, fabric and other materials. Verticality, light and movement support the creations as the pillars of the buildings.

Finally, the contemporary creations also go into dialogue with antique laces. Top pieces from the lace collection of initiator Lieve Lams and the house Serena are exceptionally exhibited in the crypt of the Predikheren Church. In addition to seventeenth and eighteenth-century laces, masterpieces from the nineteenth-century, a Golden Age for lace making, will be shown. Source of inspiration for the selection is the confrontation between religious and worldly inspiration and between antique and modern works of art.
